Origins and formation

Mosley was a prominent politician who had moved through mainstream parties before breaking away after disagreements over economic policy during the Great Depression. In October 1932, he launched the BUF, aiming to build a mass movement modeled partly on contemporary European fascist parties. Early BUF propaganda emphasized economic nationalism and strong executive power, while cultivating an image of energy and modernity.

The Catacombs of Paris are a vast underground ossuary located in the former limestone quarries beneath the city of Paris, France. Over six million Parisians’ remains were transferred here starting in the late 18th century when the city's cemeteries became over‑crowded and unstable.

Visitors descend about 20 metres underground, walk through approximately 1.5 kilometres of galleries (a one‑way circuit) through quarry tunnels and ossuary walls – including the famous inscription “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort” (“Stop! Here begins the empire of the dead”).

The environment is cool (≈14 °C) and somewhat eerie, with narrow passages, stairs (131 down, 112 up) and bones stacked in patterns along the walls.

It’s a unique blend of geology (old quarries), history (city burial practices), and memorial space.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:45 to 20:30 (last admission approx 19:30).
Closed on Mondays, and on certain public holidays (January 1, May 1, December 25) unless noted otherwise.

Located on the southern shore of the Varanger Peninsula along the Varanger Fjord, part of the town extends onto Vadsøya Island, connected to the mainland by a bridge. The town covers 3.43 km² and has a population (2023) of 4,654, resulting in a population density of 1,357/km².

Vadsø Church is located in the town and serves as the seat of the Varanger prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The midnight sun is visible from 17 May to 28 July, and the polar night occurs from 26 November to 17 January.

History

The original settlement in the 16th century was a fishing village on Vadsøya Island, later moving to the mainland. Vadsø was granted town status in 1833. During the 19th century, many settlers from Finland and northern Sweden migrated due to famine, and Finnish became the majority language for a time. Finnish is still spoken in some homes.

Vadsø was the base of Muitalægje, the first Sámi-language newspaper, published from 1873 to 1875.
