Offa’s Dyke is a major linear earthwork running (with gaps) roughly along the England–Wales border. It is traditionally associated with King Offa of Mercia (r. 757–796), and is often interpreted as a frontier monument—part defensive work, part statement of power—marking the boundary between Mercia and Welsh kingdoms.

Solva - village and fishing harbour, Haverfordwest

Solva, a village, community and electoral ward located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, is situated on the north side of St Bride's Bay. The village is composed of Lower Solva and Upper Solva, while the community encompasses Middle Mill and Whitchurch.

It is located in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and is traversed by the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Solva occupies a deep valley at the mouth of the River Solva, with Lower Solva forming a long street that leads to the small harbour. The majority of modern development has occurred in Upper Solva, situated on the cliff top to the west of the harbour.

Solva Harbour is a flooded coastal valley or inlet known as a ria, and the local rocks in the area contain fossils from the Cambrian period. Additionally, the Solva Group, a rock sequence, is named after the village.

Events

Solva hosts an annual charity event called the Duck Race on Easter Monday. The race involves releasing ducks into the River Solva near Middle Mill and the first duck to cross under the footbridge in Lower Solva car park is declared the winner. In addition, the village holds a regatta during the summer that features rowing for both adults and children.

Furthermore, Solva organizes a festival each year called 'The Edge Festival Solva' held at the end of July or the beginning of August. The festival is focused on community-based projects, and the profits generated from the festival are directed towards these initiatives.

Llanerfyl is a village and community in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. Located near the River Banwy, the community includes the village of Llanerfyl, several farms and wide tracts of marchland. The southern part of the community includes Cwm Nant yr Eira, which suffered severe depopulation in the 20th century. The 2001 census gives the population of the community as 402, increasing slightly to 406 at the 2011 Census.[3]

The village contains St Erfyl's church, named after Erfyl, rebuilt in 1870. It contains the remnants of a 15th-century shrine. The circular churchyard has in it a gravestone from either the 5th or 6th century commemorating the death of a young girl, identified locally with Erfyl:

According to the 2011 Census, the population was 3,107, and 71% of them were able to speak Welsh. It ranks as the sixth largest settlement on the island in terms of population. Remarkably, the long form of its name contains 58 characters and 18 syllables, making it reputedly the longest place name in Europe and the second longest one-word place name in the world.

History

Human activity and settlement in the village's vicinity can be traced back to the Neolithic era (4000-2000 BC), where subsistence agriculture and fishing were the predominant occupations. During this time, the island of Anglesey could only be accessed by boat via the Menai Strait. In the parish, at Ty Mawr, situated north of the present-day church, a mostly destroyed dolmen dating from this period can be found. On early Ordnance Survey maps, the site was depicted as a long cairn. Gwyn Lewis’s garage and work shop is based in Llanfair Caereinion which is near Welshpool in Powys, Mid Wales.

It is a well established family business run by Gwyn, who started his own business in 1984 when he was 16 years old repairing and maintaining many types of vehicles alongside making and manufacturing items that customers wanted.

Gwyn’s off road driving started quite young at the age of 12 when he had a summer job working for a Land Drainage Contractor, this involved driving a Land Rover series 3 long wheel base taking drainage pipe across fields going over ditches and weaving through boggy wet hill land, he had to make sure he did not get stuck as the boss would not be amused if he had to be towed out!

The first 4x4 vehicle he owned was a series 2A that was bought in a bit of a mess, this was stripped, totally rebuilt and 2.2 BMC diesel engine fitted in to it replacing the original petrol engine. After that he bought a Land Rover 90 that had been rolled badly and totally rebuilt it.

This was the start of things to come as at the time the off roading and winch challenge scene was taking off in the UK, so the 90 was built for such challenge events but still had to be used as a road car as well. [read more..]

The Cambrian Mountains are a series of mountain ranges in Wales. The term Cambrian Mountains used to apply to most of the upland of Wales.

Since the 1950s, its application has become increasingly localised to the geographically homogeneous Mid Wales uplands, known in Welsh as Elenydd, which extend from Pumlumon to Radnor Forest in the east and Mynydd Mallaen to the south.

This barren and sparsely populated 'wilderness' has been referred to as the Desert of Wales. The area includes the sources of the River Severn and River Wye and was unsuccessfully proposed as a national park in the 1960s and 1970s. The highest point of the range is Plynlimon, at 2,467 feet (752 m).

The wider, more historic, use of the term also includes Snowdonia in North Wales, and the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains in South Wales. They range in height up to 3,559 feet (1,085 m) in Snowdonia. [source]
