Ewelme Cottage, 1863 - most haunted places in the city, Auckland

Ewelme Cottage is named after the church of the same name. It was built mostly of kauri in 1863 and 1864 for Church of England clergyman Reverend Vicesimus Lush and family while he was vicar of All Saints Church, Howick. This was so that his sons could attend the Church of England Grammar School in Parnell.

The cottage was continuously occupied by the Lush family, among them Mary Ruddock, until 1968. Since 1969, it has been preserved as a house museum by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as the Lush family had left it, with about 2,000 books, hundreds of pages of sheet music, original artworks and a vast array of everyday objects from their time period.

In an article published in The New Zealand Herald in 2011, Ewelme Cottage was suggested as possibly the most important of the Auckland's Historic Places Trust properties, despite being the smallest.

The drawing room, veranda and garden of Ewelme Cottage were used in the production of the 1993 Oscar-winning film The Piano.

Regarded as one of the most haunted places in the city, it is claimed to be haunted by spirits of women and children. The house is reputedly haunted in particular by a young girl who has reportedly appeared by an oak tree in the garden. A local clairvoyant claimed that this ghost may be the spirit of a young female who was insane. According to a curator of the historic home, sightings of ghosts at Ewelme Cottage date back to 1945. In 2020, Ewelme Cottage offered free entry for Waitangi Day. [source]

Kingseat Hospital, a former psychiatric facility in New Zealand, has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the country.

As of 2011, there have been over a hundred reports of apparitions within its walls.

The hospital was established in 1932 and, during its operation, it witnessed a higher number of staff deaths than patient fatalities, likely attributable to the increased emotional and mental strain on the workers. Additionally, the grounds witnessed a significant number of suicides. Visitors have reported sightings of a nurse, commonly referred to as the "Grey Lady," who is said to roam the corridors of the hospital to this day.

Located in Karaka, south of Auckland, Kingseat Hospital has been the site of three popular attractions in New Zealand since 2005. Among them is Spookers, which is believed to be the only scream park of its kind in Australasia as of 2011 and has been dubbed the "number 1 Haunted Attraction in the Southern Hemisphere."

Despite its transformation into an entertainment hub, Kingseat Hospital is still widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most haunted locations, as reported by stuff.co.nz.

Vulcan Hotel, 1882 - haunted public house, St Bathans

The Vulcan Hotel is a restored and reputedly haunted public house, located on the main street of St Bathans, and is the town's main tourist attraction. Originally called the Ballarat Hotel, it was built in 1882 of mud brick.

The building is registered as a Category I historic place by Heritage New Zealand.

The building is notable as possibly the country's most famous haunted building. Room 1 of the hotel is reputedly home to the spirit of a young woman, thought by some to be a prostitute known "the Rose", who was strangled to death in the hotel in the 1880s. [source]

The Whatipu Campground contains numerous spacious, flat campsites. In peak camping periods we do get busy but to-date we have not been full.

As there are no allocated camping sites, the campground operates on a 1st in, best spot, basis. The campground facilities are simple. There is no electricity or hot water. There are three composting toilets, two cold showers and several water taps.
