A camshaft is a rotating shaft inside your engine that controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves. It plays a crucial role in timing the flow of air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber and the release of exhaust gases out of the engine.

How It Works

The camshaft has lobes (or cams) — egg-shaped protrusions — that push against:

  • Rocker arms or cam followers (in pushrod engines), or

  • Directly onto valves (in overhead camshaft engines, like in the Ford Ranger T6).

As the camshaft rotates:

  • The cam lobes push the valves open.

  • Valve springs then pull them closed when the lobe rotates away.

This process is synchronized with the crankshaft using a timing chain or timing belt.
