In general, a unionist is someone who supports a political or economic union between regions, states, or groups and wants to keep that union together.

It’s a broad term that can apply to many countries and historical situations.

A unionist typically:

  • Opposes separation, secession, or breaking away

Examples of “Unionist” in Different Contexts

Unionists want to keep the UK united (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland).

2. United States (Historical)

During the American Civil War, “Unionists” supported the Union (the northern states) and opposed the Confederacy breaking away.

3. Spain

A “unionist” may oppose Catalan or Basque independence and support keeping Spain unified.

4. Generic Political Context

Any political debate where:

  • One side wants independence or separation

  • The other side wants to maintain unity
